WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2010FEBRUARY – BLACK HISTORY MONTH PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION – NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH “NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2010 as National African American History Month. I call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand ten, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fourth.” President BARACK OBAMA BLACK HISTORY FACT: JOSEPHINE BAKER (1906-1975) Baker, Josephine (1906-1975), African-American dancer and singer, born St. Louis, Mo., as Freda Josephine McDonald. In 1923 and 1924 she appeared in Broadway chorus lines. She became a sensation in Paris in La Revue Negre (1925), renowned for her jazz singing, dancing, and exotically skimpy costumes. By 1927, she was one of Europe’s most famous and highly paid entertainers. Naturalized as a French citizen in 1937, she worked for the Resistance in World War II and was awarded (1961) the Legion of Honor. She died in Paris after 14 triumphant performances of Josephine, celebrating her 50 years as a performer in Paris. COLLEGE/CAREER * COLLEGE PREP PROGRAM FOR GIRLS – C-track females in 9th and 10th grade are invited to apply for the Scripps College Academy, a college prep and leadership program on the campus of Scripps College. If you would like to learn more about the program, a representative will be in the College Center on Wednesday, March 10 at 9:30m. (Bryan) * E.O.P. UPDATE – The deadline to submit an E.O.P. Application for Cal State LA is February 28. E.O.P is a support services program that provides tutoring, academic advisement, and financial aid to low income and/or first generation college students. They also assist applicants with low test scores or GPAs to gain admission. Seniors applying to CSULA that fit these criteria are strongly advised to apply online at www.csumentor.edu! See Ms. Bryan in the College Center if you have any questions. (Bryan) JUNIORS REGISTER FOR THE S.A.T. – The deadline to register for the May S.A.T. is March 25th. Fee waivers are available. Juniors taking AP Exams are strongly advised to take the S.A.T. Subject Tests. B-track juniors are encouraged to register before going off track. (Bryan) JUNIORS REGISTER FOR THE ACT – The deadline to register for the April ACT is March 5th. Fee waivers are available. B-track juniors are strongly encouraged to sign up before going off track. (Bryan) JUNIORS – VISIT LOYOLA MARY MOUNT UNIVERSITY AND SANTA MONICA COLLEGE WITH GEAR UP – Visit LMU and SMC with GEAR UP on Wednesday, March 10. Pick up trip slips in the GEAR UP Green Room Office. There are only 60 spaces available! (Reisman) SENIORS INTERESTED IN ATTENDING SMC – Complete your application now at www.smc.edu. SMC Counselor will be available in the College Office on Thursday afternoon (12:30pm-3pm), February 25 and 9:30am-12noon on Thursday, March 4. Sign up in the College Center. (Bryan) NEW SCHOLARSHIP LIST – There is a new copy of Boons for Barristers available in the College Center. There are lots of new scholarships with fast approaching deadlines, so get a copy today. Also, there are scholarships for 10th and 11th grade students. (Bryan) SENIORS SUBMIT YOUR CAL GRANT – Have you submitted your Cal Grant form yet? Now is the time to turn it in. If you have at least a 2.0 GPA you could receive up to $9,000 of financial aid for college. Forms are available in the College Center. Deadline, March 2nd. (Bryan) LACC – The LACC rep will be in the College Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am until 1pm. Students are welcome to come by to apply or sign up for classes for additional credit/make-ups. (Bryan) FINANCIAL AID – Now is the time to apply for financial aid. Seniors can submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Ms. Bryan is available to help you submit the FAFSA online. Just bring in your parents’ financial documents (i.e., tax return, paystubs, or W-2). There will also be workshops to help students submit the FAFSA in the College Center at 6pm on Wednesday, February 25. Students can also attend a Cash for College workshop for help (Bryan) CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOPS – Cash for College workshops are available to help students fill out the FAFSA and Cal Grant forms for free. Financial aid experts will be at the following location to assist you and your parents with completing these forms: February 20th at LACC (9am-1pm). Participants are also eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship for attending. For more info visit www.calgrants.org. (Bryan) STUDENTS * WINTER FORMAL DANCE – Barristers! The junior class presents Winter Formal “Big City Bright Lights” on Friday, February 26 from 8pm-midnight. Tickets on sale in front of the Attendance Office or Student Store for only $8. (Reynosa) FREE FLU AND H1N1 SHOT AVAILABLE AT HEALTH CENTER FOR STUDENTS – Stay healthy by getting the flu and H1N1 shot at the Health Center for free. Parent permission is required. Please stop by the Health Center to pick up parent/legal guardian permission forms. (Lam) CLUBS * P.A.W.S. CLUB – Join us in the Library tomorrow (2/25/10) to create public awareness for the treatment of animals. GEORGE AND GRIFFITH PARK BLVD. – As of Monday, March 1st, all street parking restrictions will be enforced on St. George and Griffith Park Blvd. The parking relaxation period will end on February 26, 2010. Starting Monday, the NEW gate on Griffith Park Blvd. will be used to drive and park on campus and we will gain some more parking spaces. See Mr. Juarez if you have any questions. (Juarez, E.)
